Lagos de Montebello

A chain of more than 50 small lakes in the pine-oak forests of eastern Chiapas near the Guatemalan border, Montebello's lakes range in color from jade and emerald to deep violet and azure depending on mineral content and depth. The national park surrounding the lakes protects dense forest crossed by dirt paths accessible on foot or horseback. The remote setting and lack of major development contribute to its appeal as a photography destination.
