A series of turquoise cascades on the Xanil River in Chiapas, Agua Azul gains its vivid color from dissolved calcium carbonate precipitating on rocks and fallen logs. Multiple tiers descend through limestone formations in a subtropical forest setting, with the largest falls reaching several meters in height. The intense color is most pronounced during the dry season when rainfall does not dilute the mineral concentration.
