A Late Classic Maya walled city built atop sea cliffs on the Caribbean coast, Tulum is one of the few pre-Columbian sites overlooking the ocean. The main temple, El Castillo, served as a navigational lighthouse for canoe traders. The combination of ancient stone architecture, turquoise water, and white beach below provides one of the most photographed juxtapositions in Mesoamerican archaeology.
