The pyramids of Giza — including the only surviving Wonder of the ancient world — are just the headline act of a funerary landscape stretching south through Saqqara to the Bent and Red Pyramids of Dahshur. Here lay Memphis, capital of Egypt's Old Kingdom, and the tombs, mastabas and temples of its necropolis chronicle the pharaohs' pursuit of eternity across centuries of dynastic power. UNESCO inscribed the ensemble in 1979 among its earliest World Heritage listings.
