Frontiers of the Roman Empire – The Lower German Limes

Rome's frontier in Lower Germany was a river: the Rhine, patrolled by fleets and lined with strongholds from the Rhenish uplands to the North Sea. The 102 components of this German-Dutch World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2021, trace roughly 400 km of that riverine border — legionary bases, forts, watchtowers, harbours, a canal, an aqueduct, even a fleet station. Most of it lies buried, and waterlogged soils have preserved Roman timber and organic remains to an exceptional degree.
