Hueco Tanks preserves three rocky hills of syenite porphyry that rise from the Chihuahuan Desert east of El Paso, containing natural rock basins — huecos — that collect rainwater and have supported human habitation for at least ten thousand years. The site holds one of the largest and most significant concentrations of rock art in North America, with over 3,000 pictographs representing Jornada Mogollon, Mescalero Apache, and earlier cultures. The fractured rock faces and boulders also make Hueco Tanks one of the most celebrated bouldering destinations in the United States.
