Padre Island National Seashore protects 130 kilometers of the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world along the Texas Gulf Coast between Corpus Christi and South Padre Island. The park's Kemp's ridley sea turtle nesting program is one of the most significant sea turtle conservation efforts in the western Gulf of Mexico, with nesting activity observable on the beach from May through July. The Malaquite Visitor Center provides beach access to vehicle-free zones where migrating shorebirds and waterfowl concentrate during spring and fall.
