Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the United States, stretching roughly 120 kilometers through the Texas Panhandle with walls reaching 240 meters in depth. The canyon exposes geological strata spanning 250 million years, including the vivid reds, oranges, and yellows of Triassic-age mudstones and sandstones that give the canyon its distinctive coloration. The Pioneer Amphitheater at the canyon floor hosts a musical drama each summer, while hiking and mountain bike trails traverse the canyon's lower terraces.
