The Gateway Arch stands at 192 meters on the west bank of the Mississippi River in downtown St. Louis, the tallest arch in the world and the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965, the stainless steel catenary arch frames river views and the Old Courthouse visible through its legs depending on approach angle. A tram system inside the arch legs carries visitors to the observation deck at the apex, providing views of the St. Louis metropolitan area and the river floodplain to the east.
