The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore encompasses 21 islands and 12 kilometers of adjacent mainland coastline in northwestern Wisconsin's Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior. The islands' brownstone sea caves, carved by waves and winter ice, are accessible by kayak in summer and on foot across frozen Lake Superior in winter, when dramatic ice formations coat the cave walls and ceilings. Six historic lighthouses dot the archipelago, and the mainland unit at Bayfield provides a base for island exploration.
