Isle Royale National Park comprises a roadless archipelago in northwestern Lake Superior accessible only by ferry or floatplane from Houghton, Copper Harbor, or Grand Portage. The main island, 72 kilometers long, has over 160 kilometers of trails passing through boreal forest, rocky ridgelines, and inland lakes that support a wolf and moose population that has been studied for over six decades in one of the longest continuous predator-prey ecology studies in the world. The park receives fewer visitors per year than any other national park in the lower 48 states.
