Indiana Dunes National Park encompasses 25 kilometers of Lake Michigan shoreline at the southernmost tip of the lake, an area where glacial deposits created a mosaic of active dunes, black oak savannas, bogs, and beach ridges within 50 kilometers of downtown Chicago. Mount Baldy, a living dune, migrates inland as much as a meter per year and provides panoramic views over the lake and industrial shoreline. The park's ecological diversity, including species from Arctic tundra, desert, prairie, and deciduous forest, made it a significant site in the development of plant ecology as a science.
