Gates of the Arctic lies entirely above the Arctic Circle in northern Alaska and has no roads, trails, or visitor facilities within its boundaries — entry is exclusively by small aircraft or on foot from the Dalton Highway. The park protects the central Brooks Range, a north-south trending mountain chain that forms the continental divide between Arctic and Pacific drainages in Alaska. River valleys within the park see large caribou migrations twice a year and support wolves, grizzly bears, and Dall sheep in near-complete wilderness conditions.
