Chugach State Park encompasses nearly 2,000 square kilometers of the Chugach Mountains directly east of Anchorage, providing one of the largest urban-adjacent wilderness areas in the United States. Trails accessible from city trailheads climb through birch forest into alpine tundra with views of Knik Arm, Cook Inlet, and on clear days, Denali over 250 kilometers to the north. Flattop Mountain, the most frequently climbed peak in Alaska, offers a straightforward route to a summit panorama above Anchorage.
