Glacier Bay National Park occupies a fjord system in Southeast Alaska that was almost entirely covered by a single glacier as recently as 1750, making it one of the most remarkable examples of rapid glacial retreat and ecosystem succession in the world. Tidewater glaciers calving directly into the bay, including the Johns Hopkins and Margerie Glaciers, are accessible by cruise ship and small vessel. The park supports large populations of humpback whales, orcas, brown bears, and mountain goats.
