Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau was a place of refuge in ancient Hawaiian society where kapu-breakers, defeated warriors, and non-combatants could find sanctuary from death by entering its grounds and receiving absolution from resident priests. The park contains reconstructed thatched structures, carved wooden kiʻi images, and a 300-year-old royal fishpond along a stunning lava-rock shoreline. The site offers a concentrated introduction to the political and spiritual systems of pre-contact Hawaiʻi.
