Stone Circles of Senegambia

For more than 1,500 years, communities along the River Gambia raised rings of laterite pillars over their burial mounds, creating one of the densest concentrations of megalithic monuments anywhere. The World Heritage listing of 2006 covers 93 circles in four great clusters — Sine Ngayène and Wanar in Senegal, Wassu and Kerbatch in the Gambia — selected from over 1,000 monuments scattered through the river country. Excavated graves place the tradition between the 3rd century BC and the 16th century AD, the work of a prosperous, well-organised society.
