Hanauma Bay occupies a flooded volcanic crater on the southeastern coast of Oʻahu, forming a sheltered horseshoe bay with a fringing coral reef. The bay's shallow inner reef hosts a dense population of Hawaiian green sea turtles and colorful reef fish that have grown accustomed to calm conditions under strict visitor management protocols. Entry numbers are capped and a conservation education program is required before entering the water.
