Waipio Valley

Waipiʻo Valley opens onto the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island as a broad amphitheater ringed by 600-meter cliffs draped in tropical vegetation. The valley floor holds taro fields, a black sand beach where the valley stream meets the sea, and remnants of ancient settlements that once made this one of the most significant cultural centers in Hawaiian history. Views from the valley rim at the end of Highway 240 are among the most dramatic coastal vantage points on the island.
