Haleakalā National Park

Haleakalā National Park encompasses the massive dormant shield volcano that forms the eastern half of Maui, culminating at a summit of 3,055 meters above sea level. The summit crater — technically a large erosional depression — spans roughly 11 kilometers and is filled with cinder cones painted in rust, ochre, and gray. Pre-dawn arrivals gather at the summit overlook to photograph the sunrise above the cloud layer, a spectacle that has drawn visitors for over a century.
