Appomattox Court House National Historical Park preserves the village where General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the Civil War in the east. The McLean House, in which the surrender was signed, has been reconstructed on its original foundations following its dismantling in the 1890s and stands at the center of the preserved village. The park also includes the Appomattox Court House building, a tavern, and several outbuildings, creating an intact mid-nineteenth-century Virginia village landscape.
