Antietam National Battlefield in western Maryland preserves the fields around Sharpsburg where the Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862, the bloodiest single-day battle in American military history, with approximately 23,000 casualties. The park contains Burnside Bridge, the Cornfield, and Bloody Lane, three focal points of the fighting whose names have entered the lexicon of American military history. The rural Maryland landscape of farm fields, stone walls, and woodlots has remained relatively unchanged since the battle, offering a landscape with unusual historical integrity.
