Mammoth Cave National Park in south-central Kentucky contains the world's longest known cave system, with more than 420 miles of explored and surveyed passages beneath a sandstone caprock and limestone plateau. The cave has been used by humans for at least 5,000 years, evidenced by pre-Columbian artifacts found deep within its passages. The Frozen Niagara formation in the Echo River section, where flowstone and draperies have built up over millennia, represents one of the most visually elaborate speleothem formations in the eastern United States.
