St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge stretches along the Gulf Coast of the Florida Panhandle south of Tallahassee, encompassing impounded marshes, tidal wetlands, pine flatwoods, and the St. Marks Lighthouse, in continuous operation since 1842. The refuge serves as a critical wintering area for migratory waterfowl and as a monarch butterfly staging ground, with large roosts forming along the coast in October during southbound migration. The lighthouse road at dusk frequently offers photographs combining the historic masonry tower with Gulf Coast marsh and evening skies.
