Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Collier County, southwestern Florida, preserves the largest remaining old-growth bald cypress forest in North America, with individual trees estimated to be more than 500 years old. The 2.25-mile boardwalk provides dry access through the swamp, where the canopy closes to create a cathedral effect above the tannin-stained water. The sanctuary hosts the largest wood stork nesting colony in the United States when conditions in the broader Everglades system are favorable.
