Brevard is a small city in Transylvania County in the mountains of western North Carolina, surrounded by Pisgah National Forest and more than 250 identified waterfalls within the county, earning the region the designation Waterfall Capital of the East. The Pisgah Ranger District includes Looking Glass Rock, a dome of exposed granite that reflects sunlight and rain in the manner that inspired its name, as well as Looking Glass Falls, easily accessible from the road. The area supports a population of white squirrels, a locally rare leucistic form of the Eastern gray squirrel, for which the town holds an annual festival.
