Block Island sits thirteen miles off the Rhode Island coast in Block Island Sound and has been described by The Nature Conservancy as one of the last great places in the Western Hemisphere for its relatively intact natural systems. The island's 365 freshwater ponds, open moorland, and clay cliffs at Mohegan Bluffs — which drop roughly 200 feet to a boulder-strewn beach — have made it a significant stopover for migratory songbirds and raptors. The North Light at Sandy Point has marked the northern tip of the island since 1867.
