Quechee Gorge cuts 165 feet into the glacially compressed bedrock of central Vermont, earning it the designation of Vermont's Little Grand Canyon. The Ottauquechee River flows through the bottom of the gorge, which can be viewed from the 1911 highway bridge on US Route 4 or explored via maintained trails along the rim and down to river level. The gorge walls expose a sequence of metamorphic rock laid down hundreds of millions of years ago, and autumn colors on the surrounding deciduous forest frame the cliff face in late September.
