Completed in 1791 under orders from President George Washington, Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and one of the most frequently painted and photographed in the United States. The white conical tower rises 72 feet from the headland at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, with the rocky Atlantic coast stretching in both directions from its base. The keeper's quarters now houses a maritime museum, and the surrounding park grounds provide multiple vantage points along the rocky shoreline.
