White Mountain National Forest covers roughly 750,000 acres of northern New Hampshire and western Maine, centered on the Presidential Range, whose summits carry the names of American presidents. Mount Washington at 6,288 feet is the highest peak in the northeastern United States and is notorious for extreme weather; a surface wind gust of 231 miles per hour recorded there in 1934 stood as the world record for nearly 62 years. The Kancamagus Highway crosses the forest east to west, providing access to dozens of trailheads and fall foliage viewpoints.
