The eleven glacially carved lakes of the Finger Lakes region in central New York are oriented north-south and range from Cayuga, the longest at 61 miles, to smaller bodies like Canandaigua and Seneca. The steep hillsides flanking the lakes support vineyards that have established New York as a significant wine-producing region, particularly for Riesling. Taughannock Falls, northwest of Ithaca on Cayuga Lake, drops 215 feet in a single plunge — taller than Niagara Falls — in a narrow gorge cut through Devonian sedimentary rock.
