Everglades National Park protects the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, a slow-moving river of grass 60 miles wide that drains southward across the tip of the Florida peninsula. The park shelters American crocodiles, West Indian manatees, and the Florida panther, along with hundreds of wading bird species whose concentrations at rookeries represent some of the most spectacular wildlife photography opportunities on the continent. The Anhinga Trail near the Royal Palm area allows extremely close observation of herons, anhingas, and alligators.
