Built in 1872, Bodie Island Lighthouse stands at the northern end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, its black-and-white horizontal banding distinguishing it from its spiral-marked counterpart to the south. The surrounding Bodie Island Dike impoundments attract large concentrations of migratory waterfowl in autumn, making the grounds valuable for wildlife photography as well as architectural subjects. The lighthouse grounds and keeper's quarters are open to visitors during the summer season.
