At 198 feet, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, built in 1870 to warn ships away from Diamond Shoals, one of the most hazardous stretches of the Atlantic coast. The black-and-white spiral daymark pattern makes it instantly recognizable among American lighthouses. In 1999, the entire structure was moved 2,900 feet inland to save it from encroaching shoreline erosion — one of the largest lighthouse relocations ever undertaken.
