This chain of barrier islands stretches roughly 200 miles along the North Carolina coast, separated from the mainland by Albemarle and Pamlico sounds. The islands saw the Wright brothers' first powered flight at Kill Devil Hills in 1903 and were the site of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, adding layers of historical significance to a predominantly natural landscape. Cape Hatteras National Seashore protects the widest section, where the lighthouse stands 198 feet above the surrounding beach.
