George Vanderbilt commissioned this 8,000-acre estate outside Asheville in the 1890s, and the resulting 178,926-square-foot chateau remains the largest privately owned house in the United States. Richard Morris Hunt designed the building in the French Renaissance Revival style, and Frederick Law Olmsted laid out the grounds with formal gardens, a conservatory, and managed woodland. The estate still operates as a working winery and managed visitor destination.
