This protected stretch of the outer Cape encompasses forty miles of barrier beach, clay cliffs, freshwater kettle ponds, and Atlantic white cedar swamps. The Province Lands dunes near Provincetown rank among the largest coastal dunes in the northeastern United States. Light shifts dramatically across the open water from late afternoon into evening, drawing landscape photographers to the Head of the Meadow and Race Point beaches.
