Pyrénées - Mont Perdu

Centred on the limestone summit of Monte Perdido at 3,352 metres, this Mixed World Heritage Site spans the crest of the Pyrenees between France and Spain. On the Spanish flank the massif plunges into two of Europe's deepest canyons; the French side falls away in towering glacial cirques. Just as remarkable is what people still do here: each summer herders drive their flocks to the high pastures, keeping alive an agro-pastoral way of life once widespread across upland Europe. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1997.
