A national monument near Grand Junction, Colorado, preserving red sandstone canyons, monoliths, and mesa-top terrain at the northern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Rim Rock Drive runs 23 miles along the canyon rim with numerous pullouts overlooking Independence Monument, a 450-foot sandstone pillar, and other formations. The Fruita Canyon area is popular with road cyclists and the monument hosts part of the Ironman cycling course. Desert bighorn sheep are commonly spotted on the canyon walls and monument roads.
