A high-desert town in northern New Mexico at about 6,900 feet elevation, situated between the Rio Grande Gorge and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Taos has been an art colony since the early 20th century and maintains a gallery-rich historic district centered on the central plaza. The Taos Ski Valley lies 20 miles north, offering skiing in the Sangre de Cristo range. The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, one of the highest highway bridges in the United States, spans the 600-foot basalt canyon 10 miles west of town.
