A vast expanse of hard salt crust west of Salt Lake City, the remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville that once covered much of the Great Basin. At its widest the flats stretch about 12 miles, producing a surreal reflective surface when covered by a thin layer of standing water in winter and spring. The Bonneville Speedway on the north edge has hosted land speed records for over a century. The area is freely accessible by car, and the flat horizon creates disorienting photographic perspectives.
