The Palouse is an agricultural region in southeastern Washington and northwestern Idaho characterized by rolling hills of deep windblown loess soil, cultivated primarily in wheat, barley, and lentils. The undulating landscape produces sinuous ridgeline patterns of varying crop color and stage that shift dramatically from the green of early spring growth through the gold and brown of the summer harvest. Steptoe Butte, a quartzite island summit rising 3,612 feet above the surrounding farmland, offers a 360-degree elevated view of the rolling hills that is a classic American landscape photography subject.
