Newberry National Volcanic Monument south of Bend encompasses the caldera of Newberry Volcano, which holds two distinct caldera lakes — Paulina Lake and East Lake — separated by a lava flow as young as 1,300 years. The Paulina Peak summit at 7,985 feet provides a commanding view of the caldera interior and the high desert plateau of central Oregon. The Big Obsidian Flow, one of the youngest obsidian lava flows in the lower 48 states, is accessible via a short interpretive trail across the glittering black glass.
