The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches for 40 miles along the central Oregon coast, containing the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America, reaching heights of over 500 feet in places. Wind and wave action continuously reshape the dune surface into rippled corridors and wind-sculpted crests that alternate with deflation plains holding freshwater lakes. The dunes are open to off-highway vehicles in some zones, while others are restricted to foot travel through the shifting sand and coastal forest.
