Smith Rock State Park in the high desert of central Oregon rises abruptly from the Crooked River canyon, presenting vertical rhyolite and basalt formations that are considered the birthplace of modern American sport climbing. Misery Ridge Trail climbs steeply from the canyon floor to the summit of the main rock formation, providing views across the Cascade Range including Broken Top, the Three Sisters, and Mount Jefferson. The sharp volcanic towers reflected in the river bend below are a signature Oregon landscape photography subject.
