The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon up to 4,000 feet deep carved by the Columbia River along the border of Oregon and Washington, designated a National Scenic Area. The dramatic vertical relief creates a unique climate gradient that supports both rain forest on the wet western side and grassland on the dry eastern end. Dozens of waterfalls drop from the basalt cliffs on the Oregon side, with Multnomah Falls at 620 feet being the most visited natural attraction in Oregon.
