Crater Lake occupies the caldera of Mount Mazama, a volcano that collapsed approximately 7,700 years ago, forming a lake 1,943 feet deep — the deepest in the United States. The lake's extraordinary depth and the absence of inlet streams produce water of exceptional clarity and a distinctive deep blue coloration. Rim Drive, a 33-mile road encircling the lake at the caldera's edge, provides access to dozens of overlooks including Rim Village and the view down to Wizard Island.
