Santa Barbara is a coastal city on a south-facing crescent of shoreline between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific, maintaining a distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival architectural character in its downtown core. The Old Mission Santa Barbara, established in 1786 and rebuilt after an 1812 earthquake, is among the best-preserved of the California missions. The waterfront Stearns Wharf and the grid of State Street anchor a compact city center walkable from the beach.
