Muir Woods National Monument preserves a 554-acre stand of old-growth coast redwoods in the coastal valleys of Mount Tamalpais, just north of San Francisco. The cathedral-like groves along Redwood Creek contain trees over 250 feet tall and more than a thousand years old. Filtered light in the dense canopy creates atmospheric conditions particularly favorable for forest photography, especially on overcast mornings when mist lingers among the trunks.
