A large American luxury ocean liner converted to a troop transport during the Second World War, the SS President Coolidge struck two friendly-fire mines at the entrance to Segond Channel off Espiritu Santo and sank in 1942. The wreck lies in 20 to 70 metres of water and is one of the largest and most intact accessible shipwrecks in the world, containing vehicles, artillery, and personal artefacts largely in their wartime positions. It is a premier technical and recreational dive destination in the Pacific.
